About

We are three Kirk Hammerton residents and would love to offer a welcoming, social and sporting space for the residents of Kirk Hammerton and the surrounding areas.

We have identified the field on the edge of the village, off the A59 (known locally as “the OS Field”) as a great location for this community hub and would love to hear your views. This field was bequeathed to the Kirk Hammerton Parish Council (with whom we have discussed our proposal) for use by the local community – let’s use it!

We propose to erect a sports hall, with café, community room(s) and gym.

There are currently no indoor sports facilities in the local area. Physical exercise and social interaction are proven to improve life experiences of both the young and old. People currently have to drive to find these. Modern, local facilities would add to the wellbeing of this community. We would look to offer the use to local teams, groups who want to establish themselves, local sports businesses and to families who just fancy playing something for an hour at the weekend.

The café would serve local, nutritious and affordable food and drink and promote local businesses. There would be a community space aimed at promoting wellbeing, support and community groups. This would include 0-5 parenting support groups groups, board game groups and mental health and charity groups. The circuits gym would be configured to be accessible to all demographics.

We would establish a community interest company (“CIC”) which is a limited company that operates to provide a benefit to the community it serves. The purpose of a CIC is of community benefit rather than private profit. It funds itself through commercial activities, and all profits are re-invested into the CIC. It would provide local employment and partnering opportunities.

We will be seeking grant funding from appropriate organisations (for example, National Lottery, People’s Postcode Lottery, ECB, LTA, community grants). We understand that there will be many hurdles to turn this into a reality, including complex planning, highways and environment considerations, but, with your support, we would love to give it a go!

Why PicKHle?! Beth is keen on pickleball (an indoor tennis game – the third highest played sport in the US, a mixture of tennis, table tennis and badminton and easy to start and for all to enjoy!). It’s a good name for a café, and ‘Ickle PicKHle works for kids too! And the ‘KH’ is not a typo(!) – it’s our way of keeping Kirk Hammerton at the heart of the project!
